Process, Persistence & Creativity

“Don’t think, Thinking is the enemy of creativity. Its self-conscious, and anything self-conscious is lousy. You can’t try to do things. You simply must do things.” -Ray Bradbury

The creative process requires unwavering confidence in yourself and an innate ability to set aside the practicalities of life, transcending into another dimension of creativity. Creative stimulation for us is an essential part of our life. There are practical applications for thinking logically, candle making is not one of them. Follow along as I guide you through our creative process. For us it begins with a cup of coffee.

Fruity, Floral, Woody.

A multitude of ways to describe scent, with infinitely as many compositions. Top note, base, every conventional term you may have learned in making candles, we have deliberately set those aside. Making scents is an expression of ourselves, with the goal to evoke emotions of bliss and serenity. Peering into the sea of fragrances may seem daunting, but have no fear, the irrational thinkers are here. I simply pick 3 fragrances at random to work from, building around to create a full bodied scent. The process is a path of endless discovery, balancing delicate scents in lieu of perfection. Having carefully selected a fragrance mix, we commence the candle making process.

57 grams of wax and a few moments later the first test candle has been poured, and placed aside. This is a time for patience. Letting your candle mature for a few days is essential in capturing the full scent profile of what you’ve created.

Dark Room, in simplicity there is complexity.

Eliminating all external sensory influence is key in the judgment process for us. Close your eyes, imagine wandering through a forest, suddenly aware of each sound, smell, intricate sight. Now place yourself in a silent dark room with nothing but yourself and the candle. Devoid of sensory inputs it allows us to isolate the scent and pick out its subtleties. A process of trial and error over many iterations brings about unmatched satisfaction when the fragrances come together in a marriage of greatness.

My Favorite part and likely most everyone else’s, lighting the candle. Encased in that same room we light our newest creations and wait for the magic to unfold. Nothing beats a candle burning a new candle that smells great!

We have always used this creative process for our scents and always will. It has brought about our collection of scents that we are proud of and present to you.

Stay Scented,

Patrick
